Q: Waking with headache
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 29th, 2009
Hello, this question doesn't refer to me but my girlfriend. Every time she goes to sleep, whether it's at day/night, she awakens with a headache. The strength of them varies as well. I'm concerned and so is she. However, she does not currently have health insurance to cover anything. So I want to make sure where ever she seeks help at will be be the correct solution to save cost. Her sinuses have been checked and there is nothing wrong. In addition, she has nine dogs and one cat but the issue occurs even outside of the home.

Hi, and thanks for your medical question on eHealth's Ask a Doctor forum.

Poor sleep patterns like sleep apnea, restless sleep can trigger a headache in the mornings or anytime after a person wakes up from sleep. This type of headache is also associated with anxiety and tension. It could also be due to stiff neck or strain of neck muscles that gets aggravated by using pillows.

Definitely sleep studies may be needed. Before going for that maybe a chiropractor can analyze if there is neck muscle stiffness or not. It is difficult to comment beyond this on net. Hope this helps. Take care!
