Waking up gasping for air as soon as i fall asleep (not apnea?)?

Hey, im new to this forum and im really hoping someone will be able to give me some advice! I've had sleep problems for years and have only just had a doctor who sent me for some tests and an at home sleep study. My main problem is that i wake up at least a few times a night just after i've fallen asleep (or it feels that way) sort of gasping for air as though i have stopped breathing for a long time. It doesn't make me breathless, it just makes me wake up so i take a deep breath and then i fall asleep again.

I also am constantly tired throughout the day and had to stop driving a couple of years ago as i kept falling asleep at the wheel so it was too dangerous. If im sitting doing nothing i sometimes have what seems like tiny cat naps where i fall asleep for a few seconds then jolt awake and this happens quite a lot until suddenly i snap out of it.

My consultant was pretty sure that i have sleep apnea. I am skinny but apparently my airway is tiny and also i have a family history of sleep apnea and also narcolepsy.

The only problem is that i have had 2 at-home sleep studies now and they have both come back as negative. I did find it really hard to sleep properly with everything attached to me and i also have a baby who at the time was waking a lot in the night.

Recently with him sleeping for longer my symptoms seem to be worse again and i just dread going to bed at night.

Does this sound like it could be anything else (i have had a full investigation into my heart due to frequent ectopic beats and chest pain so i know its probably not cardiovascular) or should i push for a sleep study at hospital instead of at my home? I feel like my doctor probably thinks im mad but i KNOW there must be something wrong for me to have this sleep problem!
