hi

im looking for some help and advice for my brother Gary he's 26 years old and stopped smoking weed about 4 months ago but since then he has started to hear a male voice in his head that is telling him that he worthless, a freak, that he should kill his partner of 7 years and also him self. He has told me that he will sit in his livingroom and have an argument with this voice but it does no good as it is getting stronger and more powerful it has recently been telling him to go out side because it wants to tell him something. Also when he closes his eyes he is approched by 7 men they dont say any thing and he doesn't know who they are but each time they are different men. He has been to his doctor but they just took a urine sample and reffered him to a "nuthouse" (as my brother calls it) Please can you give me some help as i am really concerned about him and his young family. I feel helpless as i live in leicester and he lives in Cornwall with no family and not many friends.

Kind Regards

Teresa baines

Hi Teresa,

How many years did your brother smoke weed? I'm not sure that it is the reason for his illness but it does sound like a form of schizophrenia. You might want to google to get more information. You want to make sure he seeks psychiatric help when he leaves the hospital and that he gets the proper meds. or whatever else he needs. I hope this helps and you all find some answers soon.

It does sound like he has the positive symptoms of Schizophrenia. Does he have any other symptoms at all? like lack of emotion, social isolation ect..

If he has smoked pot for along time then it maybe that he has got Cannabis Psychosis and not Schizophrenia but i guess only a qualified person will be able to give the correct diagnosis.

The best thing you can do is try and be there for your brother, wether thats telling him that your only a phone call away, going to see him at weekends or giving him a call once or twice a week.

Suffering from the same sort of thing myself all i can say is treat him like you normally would, dont treat him differantly as it often makes people feel worse.

I hope he gets it sorted out.
