My son is eighteen months old. I put him on the baby vitamins when he was ten months old. Well, I want to do a new vitamin and I think he needs more iron. I dont know what kind of vitamin to use though. He does not like the gummies. Can anyone give me advice or suggestions?

I am fairly certain that you aren't supposed to use the gummy or flinstone vitamins until a child is two years old unless your doctor says otherwise. You are supposed to use baby vitamins until that time. If your child is eating a balanced diet there really shouldn't be a reason.

If you think he is iron deficient, you should talk to his pediatrician. Giving regular vitamins to children under 2 isn't recommended unless it's specifically for that age.

You can also put him on formula that is fortified with iron, that is targeted at helping babies over a year old grow....you will find that at any grocery store.

Thanks mominashoe! I wasn't aware that you weren't supposed to give baby vitamins without asking your doctor. News to me!

It's just mostly because of the risk of overdose. Formula and breast milk already have everything the baby needs. If the baby is failing to grow or seems deficient, then first you should talk to the doctor because giving him more might not be the answer: he could have a digestive problem or a sickness which keeps him from absorbing nutrients.

Most vitamins are safe for babies and children, as long as you go with the age level recommended on the bottle, just as you would a medicine. Iron is the one thing you have to be very careful with because overdoses can do a great deal of harm (and even can cause death) to the child.

Medication isn't really based on age but it is based on weight, majority of children at two fall into a "norm" weight catergory.

My kids are bigger and I know others who are as well but they always needed more than other kids when it came to meds...

I give my kids Flintstones, even though they have a good diet it doesnt hurt to be healthy, your body only absorbs so much vitamins and then the rest well we know what happens after...
