Someone asked a question recently about the hymen, where it's located and what to expect the first time she has sex. I like to pride myself on knowing a lot about my body, especially my female parts but I decided to search sites for a medical answer. All this time I had assumed that I was one of those women who (1) didn't bleed or feel pain when they had sex for the first time or (2)lost their hymen from unknown causes long before I had sex. Imagine my surprise when I read that the hymen is located at the entrance to the vagina! I, and many of my friends had been told for years that the hymen is located deep inside the vagina near the cervix. I still can't believe that I lived to be thirty- seven years old without knowing this fact. To top it off, as a huge fan of historical romance novels, I have read about first time sex dozens of times and EVERY SINGLE TIME the scene played out as if the hymen was deep inside the woman. (I don't want to get too graphic; use your imagination.) Am I the only person that thought this part of our anatomy was located in a completely different place?

nope...i thought that for the LONGEST time as well..and it confused me when i found out that simple activities such as bike/horse riding could break it...i too was taught in high school that it was around the cervix(or thats what I remember anyway)..it wasn't until i took anatomy and physiology in college that i found out where it really was haha

i always thought it was at the entrance as when the penis enters it brakes it. i didn't realize it could be broke by doing simple actives. so does that count if using a tampon could perhaps brake it too?

I guess physically you are no longer a virgin if your tampon breaks your hymen. I would not call myself sexually active because I no longer had my hymen, though. Hmmmmmm, I dunno. I just feel really foolish that I'm just learning about this. Like I said before, those romance novels messed me up! lol Even though I am the youngest of five girls, any talk about sex was a major no-no in my family and my mom never even had a sex talk with me. So it's no wonder I was so clueless. Becaue of my upbringing, I was never comfortable talking about sex as an adult either, so I never learned any different from my girlfriends.

Your hymen has very little to do with virginity. There are cases where women have sex and their hymen doesn't even break.

I read a lot of romance novels too. Most times they are accurate-- at least the ones I've read, other times it makes me wonder if the author has even had sex before. I can see how it would be confusing.Smile

Have any suggestions for good books/authors? I've caught up with all my favorite authors so now I'm stuck waiting for them to write more books-- I need something new to read! Very Happy

I rarely read them anymore but Elizabeth Lowell used to be my favorite author.

Most recently I've been reading Stephen King and selections from Oprah's book club. I don't care for some of her choices but I like that you can go to her website and get reader opinions and read synopses of the books.
