Q: viral infection of intestines ?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 13th, 2009
Dear Doctor,
I'm a 50 yr old women who exercises regularly and normally doesn't have health issues just an occasional asthma bout. However, since last weekend I've had extreme problems w/ flatulance. Two days later a diarrhoea attack w/ an extreme amount of white mucous. Following this, stools have been extremely thin or just diarrhoea attacks. Lots and lots of grumbling in my intestines and lots of gas. Symptoms beginning when I expect menstruation(I now have on time). I don't feel pain nor sick. I just get attacks of diarrhea w/mucous, flatulance, and discomfort. I'm a bit worried though. I don't think mucous in stool/diarrhoea is normal.
could you please give me your opinion on this. Could it be something I ate?
Yours faithfully,
Juli

Intestinal Disorders Answer A5768
Current medical status: Mucous diarrhoea/stool, gas discomfort, grumbly intestines
Current medical treatment: None. Symptoms just started

According to the data you provided, you might be experiencing a bacterial or viral infection of the intestines. The lack of blood in the stool is a good sign. You might want to visit your family doctor and have a feces culture with antibiogram in order to detect the exact bacteria and the proper antibiotic that should be used. Meanwhile, keep your hygiene high, because of the possibility of spreading the infection to the others in your surroundings (try to avoid cooking, dishwashing, use separate utensils and towels).
