Violent and Disturbing dreams
Posted: 09-23-08 19:32pm

G'day.

Just to quickly cover my background story....I started taking a drug called Champix 3 months ago to stop smoking. I am now suffering major deporession and have constant suicidal thoughts.

Since stoppng the Champix a week ago my dreams have become very violent. The problem being that it is me in the dreams dishing out the violence. I dont know what is going on???? When i say violent I mean very disturbing dreams of rape, tortue and homicide.

Has this or is this happening to anyone else??

This is really effecting me as i am starting to think I am not a not person deep down...

The FDA has issued a warning about using Chantix in February of 2008 for people looking to stop smoking. Serious neuropsychiatric symptoms have occurred in patients taking Chantix. It's not you ! But you may want to stop taking the medication in order to make the symptoms stop as well.

The makers of Chantix have included these side effects on their manufacturers web page:

The most common side effects of CHANTIX include:

* nausea
* sleep problems (trouble sleeping, or vivid, unusual, or strange dreams)
* constipation
* gas
* vomiting

Hey Rooted.

Thanks for your reply.

I guess the most concerning thing for me is that I have stopped taking the medication now. Since stopping chantix the dreams have worsened. While on Chantix I had unusually vivid dreams but to be honest I was enjoying them as they were vivid and not necessarily bad.

Since stopping the Chantix the dreams have become extremely violent.

It is starting to really do my head in and every night I get anxious before bed as i dont want to dream....

Wow, Phocks...that IS really disturbing. I'm sorry to hear about your fear of sleeping. Argh! I was taking an anti-malarial pill which was also semi-psychotic and it took a couple of weeks to get out of my system. How long has it been since you have stopped?

It has only been a week.

I fear that this has damaged me long term as it does not seem to be fading.

The dreams are very disturbing...they are making me quetion the type of person I am...

I hear you.

Who prescribed the medication? Can you seek advice from a pharmacist? IT might be worth it to make a trip to the drug store and start to ask some more probing questions.

We all have the nature of the "shadow" inside, so even your worst thoughts have been thought before...and as long as you don't act on them, they can transform. Id' encourage you to try to suspend judgment. Your brain is a little haywire right now, that's all. And the hidden impressions are popping out.

The Champix (Chantix) was prescribed by a local GP.

The past 3 weeks I have asked a lot of questions about the drug but only get the "it an unknown at this stage' answer....

It is hard to suspend judgment when you are absolutely disgusted by the person you are portaying in your own mind...does that make sense??

Yes --- and when that person scares you.

Is there maybe a neurologist or psychiatrist in your local area who can help explain what might be going on?

Hey.

Yeah I have an appoinment with a psychologist this thursday.

I am scared to tell them my thoughts to be honest..

I mean seriously...how can you tell a stranger that you are fantasising about hurting people???????

They have a duty of care to report me to the authorities...

I just dont know what to do!!

I believe that they can only report such information when their professional opinion is that you are actually going to go out and take action. Otherwise, your privacy is covered. At least, that's the law in the US...I'm not sure about Australia. But you're seeking help...and you know that the thoughts are bad, so I should think that your privacy is secure. But ask!
