Hi,my first daughter is nearly 18 months old and she has very large tonsils...they are so large that they nearly meet in the middle...she doesnt seem to have trouble eating and swallowing but i have read up on enlarged tonsils and it being related to sleap apnea...this is where for brief periods of time a child can stop breathing now and again while sleeping and they cough and choke to wake them selves up and start breathing again.my daughter Raven deffinetly doe do this and I'm so frightened that she could stop breathing and not start to breath again...i'm also petrified of operations and would probably need sedating myself if she had to go through that...i have always been very paranoid when it has come to my children and i'm constantly scared that i will loose them...has anyone got any advice for me relating to Ravens enlarged tonsils....has anyone had similar problems with children or yourselves.JadeXXXXXX

I know that this thread isn't about pregnancy but this is where i know alot of you and i know you are usually very helpfull.hope know one minds.

You could take her to the dr and see what they have to say, the other option is an angel baby monitor, it has sensors so that if your child stopped breathing for a certain length of time (30 secs i think) an alarm goes off. That could give you peace of mind, im getting one given to me as a present from my relatives because breathing difficulties run in my family, and it is common for the young children to stop breathing. I do think though, that you should take your daughter to the dr and get her checked out. if they think they need to operate, then it will be for the best of your daughter. Hope this helps.

I agree that you should definitely take her to the doctor. If she's already shown signs of having trouble breathing, you should have taken her then, immediately. They might have to remove her tonsils or there might be a medication they can give her. Don't let this go untreated.

I'm very surprised you haven't taken her to a doctor before now.

would you rather have your daughter have a very slim chance of dieing under anastisia or would you rather have the much greater chance of her dieing during an apnic episode? yes its scary, but if its gonna keep her healthy you need to do it

and an apnea is anything over 20 seconds just so you know kerryn, i only know because they thought my daughter had apnea but her spells only lasted 15 seconds at most Smile

Hi,gosh I'm very scared about this...I am ringing our doctors surgery tomorrow and will ask for a triage nurse to ring us back....hopefully that way they will fit her in to be seen tomorrow. The reason I havnt taken her to the doctors yet Aya is because myself,my partner and my family only noticed how large her tonsils are yesterday evening....and as that was sunday and today in England its been bank holiday monday it would have been very difficult to see our doctor... she is fit and well and not in pain, but i am taking her as soon as possible...ie tomorrow morning hopefully....god you have made out i am a bad parent...i can assure you i am not....after bringing up 3 children already......even though i'm paranoid about loosing them it does not mean i do not look after them.they come first in my life before anything or anyone and i love them more than anyone in the world.does any one know what percentage the risk of death is in operations like this if she was to have it and how long the operation would last....i only had two ops in my life, the one was 22 years ago when i was under one years old and the other 8 weeks ago when i had my cesarian but as you would all know you are awake for that usually so i dont know alot about operations, what goes on and how long they are for this prob....thanks for advice.

I meant I was surprised you hadn't taken her to the doctor when you noticed she was having trouble breathing at night. That would have been a major red flag for people. If you meant she was coughing at night then I must have misunderstood your original post. You mentioned sleep apnea and said your daughter definitely showed signs of this, which is why I was amazed you hadn't taken her in to be seen yet.

And nowhere in my post did I mean to insinuate that you're a bad mother. I was merely surprised that you'd possibly known about your daughter's condition and not done anything about it for a little while. You didn't say anything in your original post about only noticing her tonsils the other day, and then mentioned her sleep apnea episodes. I was only going off what you'd said here, and was expressing my concern that you hadn't brought her to a doctor before now.

If you gathered from my post that I think you're a bad mother, I apologise. That wasn't my intent. I hope the doctor is able to help her quickly and efficiently.

right this is what happend......for along time now my daughter has been having little choking episodes (sort of spluttering in her sleep) and me and my partner put it down to her having a bad cough.anyway we all only noticed her VERY large tonsils last sunday night.since then i have looked up enlarged tonsils on the internet and read that she could possibly have this sleep apnea condition...i have stayed up alot of the night (that i can) in her room while she sleeps since sunday and realised that she wakes herself up choking and then falls back to sleep...i was thinking this must be due to her enlarged tonsills....we saw our GP today and he said even though they are very big there is no cause for concern as yet and they should go down as she gets older (i am praying now like mad that this will happen) as have been and still am really very concerned and obviously panicing that she will stop breathing and die.but all i can do now is wait and keep watching....thanks to all that gave me advice.

if you are eally worried, get a baby monitor that measures breathing and sets off an alarm if your child stops breathing. Theyre expensive, but worth it, and will give you peace of mind at night

I didn't know that. That's terrifying.

Why are you still worried, though? Didn't he say she doesn't have sleep apnea, and that her waking up coughing and choking is what most children do, as in the above post? (Sorry to be so dense.)

the reason i'm still worried about this Aochriss is because i still feel and believe that she is suffering from sleep apnea, even though the doctor said he didnt think so....im a paranoid person at the best of times and as she has all the symptoms of sleep apnea......ie,choking/coughing /spluttering in her sleep, loud snoring, tirerdness in the day and of course the very large tonsills i just think she does have it.i'm very concerend and i feel i should perhaps get a second opinion.also something that has been bothering is when she eating i'm terrified that because of her tonsills nearly meeting what if the food wasnt to go down properly, surely she could get a build up of food and this could cause severe choking??????very concerend about this, ihave a phobiaof choking as it is.

Yes thank you Kerryn I'm going to look on ebay.
