Q: Various treatments for sciatica
asked by: DoctorQuestion on August 25th, 2009
I have been suffering from pain in both my legs for the past 2 years
If I run my hand over my leg I get a feeling like pins and needles or burning When in bed if I turn I get the same pain even on my knees But there is no pain as long as I don't draw my legs across the sheet

I first notice this feeling on my right thigh over 12 years ago
I have only ever smoked cigar but stopped 12 years ago and I only drink average of a beer per night

Given the symptoms you reported (pain in both legs, feelings of pins and needles or burning only when pressure is put on the skin), it is possible that you might be experiencing sciatica.

Sciatica is a set of symptoms that occur when pressure is put on one of the five roots of the sciatic nerve or on the nerve itself. The pain is felt along the nerve, although the pressure is only on a particular point of the nerve. The pressure might be caused by spinal disc herniation, misalignment of the vertebrae (spondylolisthesis), or spinal stenosis.

You might want to visit an orthopedist or a neurosurgeon. A physical examination, visualizing methods such as CT or MRI, and MR neurography might be needed for a definitive diagnosis. Depending on the underlying cause, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, non-surgical spinal decompression, or surgery might be recommended.
