Erectile dysfunction is a sexual dysfunction characterized by an inability to develop or maintain an erection. It might be caused by both physiological and psychological factors.

Disorders of the nerves responsible for the erection might cause erectile dysfunction. Arterial disorders might affect the blood flow in the penis, thus preventing erection completely.

If the production of male hormones is insufficient, erectile dysfunction might be one of the symptoms. Psychological dysfunction is characterized with physical ability to achieve erection, whereas various psychological factors (mental disorders, negative feelings) do not let the erection occur.

In these men, erection during sleeping is possible, but it is not possible once when they are awake.

Stress and expectations might also cause an inability to achieve erection. This might be particularly happening in your case. Luckily, this is not considered a pathological condition. You might be too nervous and uncomfortable during the intercourse. It is your first intercourse and you might be too stressed about the “effect”. Relaxing is a better solution.

However, if this situation repeats over and over again, you might want to visit a urologist to rule out any physiological causes for erectile dysfunction and then talk to a psychologist or sex therapist about your condition.
