Q: UTI or Chlamydia ?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on April 17th, 2009
Hi, I'm an 18 year old girl and i have been going out with my boyfriend now for about 2 weeks. The first time we had sex together 2 weeks ago i started a couple of days afterwards i had a burning sensation and typical bladder infection symptoms. So I went to the nurse the next morning and she took a urine sample and it came up with an infection so she gave me some antibiotics to help clear it up and sure enough very soon after the symptoms had disappeared. Today i received a letter back saying that i have many white blood cells in my urine which usually do indicate infection but the lab has not been able to identify clearly and that they havent been able to isolate the bacteria. Could this mean that I have Chlamydia? I've only ever had 2 sexual partners, the first was a year ago and i havent had any symptoms at all since the bladder inf. Also could it be possible it would jst be a UTI seeing as the antibiotics got rid of the symptoms completely?

According to the symptoms you reported you might be experiencing urinary tract infection.
Chlamydia might have caused this condition because Chlamydia is intracellular parasite and can not be detected easily in routine urine tests. That might explain the presence of white blood cells in the urine at the same time with lack of bacteria in the urine. However, Chlamydia can be treated with antibiotics. You might want to have several urine tests to be sure that you completely get rid of Chlamydia because it has a great potential to survive if not treated adequately.
