Uterine fibroids are benign tumors found in the uterine wall. They usually spread through more or less of the uterine wall muscles. As with other tumors, the exact reason for fibroid uterine tumors is not completely known.
The data you reported (enlarged uterus) might indicate the presence of a fibroid uterine tumor. However, other tumors might actually be present, certain of them possibly even malignant. This condition is less probable, because fibroids are actually the most common uterine tumors.
Your gynecologist would need more than a physical examination to determine if there is a tumor at all, and what kind of tumor it is. The ultrasound examination would clearly reveal a possible tumor. If there are indications, surgery might be recommended to remove the tumor. Once it is removed, it might be sent for microscopic examination to check for any signs of malignancy.
Please note that other conditions such as adenomyosis or polyps might be a cause for an enlarged uterus. Given your age, pregnancy should be ruled out, too.
