Expired Promethazine With Codeine

Well I have pneumonia and have had a bad cough. I have taken all my cough medicine which was promethazine with codeine and my cough is continuing. I have another bottle but it expired september 1, 2006. Is this ok to take and what possible effects can expired medicine have? Does medicine truly expire?
