There are so many different conditions that could exhibit the symptoms that you describe, that it is impossible to arrive at a quick answer to your question.

Hi dengram,
bursitis can be very painful indeed, but it is often a temporary condition. However, osteoarthritis is not temporary (i have had osteoarthritis for several years) and, while it is something that will affect most people by the time they are fifty, it can start at a much younger age.
