How can one get meningitis?

What is this cold. My wife and I got this horrible cold. It has extremely high fever, non-stop sweating, extreme body pains and fatigue. My wife is getting it worse than me right now and I am still graugy from having the symptoms. Is this normal flue symtoms or should we be checked out right away?
