I must be blind, but I can't find the "user groups" button or whatever that supposedly will let me see/join different groups.

Thanks for pointing this out. We don't manage groups at this time, but you can add individual members to your "Contacts" list. Just click on a person's avatar picture, and add them as a contact, friend, or family. Groups will be coming soon! Thanks for keeping us on our toes.
