Q: Use of Mirena and the return of fertility
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 8th, 2009
Well i know my treatment could vary but im talking general terms. i had an emergent cerclage at 17wks with my last pregnancy. it failed and i went into labor at 20 wks along 3/24/08. i got an iud placed 4/24/08 and taken out 10/15/08 to try again. i know i will need another cerclage but will i need complete bedrest? what about working stading up? sex? again i know my circumstances are individual to my treatment but i want to have an idea of what im getting into before hand you know. so i can make preparations. also does mirena removal really result in immediate fertility or does it take a few months i got mine out in october and got my period (late/0 in november and it seems to be on track againdo you think my fertility is still being affected?

Whether a complete rest is needed, can be decided only by your gynecologist based on the vaginal examination. Resting in bed might not be necessary for delivery, but it greatly reduces the chances for miscarriage in women with an incompetent cervix. Removal of Mirena returns the fertility almost immediately, because no long term effects of Mirena on fertility after removal have been reported.
