One of the possible symptoms of diabetes mellitus is glycosuria. Glycosuria is a condition in which glucose or simple sugar is detected in the urine due to high levels of blood sugar. Glycosuria should not be mixed up with “renal glycosuria” which indicates the presence of glucose in the urine when the kidneys themselves are damaged (but the level of blood sugar is normal).

Diabetes mellitus affects the small blood vessels (microvasculation), making some organs such as the eyes, kidneys, heart muscle, brain more susceptible to damage than others. If diabetes is not treated, glycosuria might appear. Additionally, examining the urine for glycosuria might be a good way for screening any damage done to the organs in the body, thus setting more accurate prognosis and if necessary, changing the treatment.
