Q: Urinating while sleeping

Someone I know continuously urinates while sleeping. He is 36 years old and only does this after he has been drinking. Someone told me his kidneys may be failing and it really upset me. He drinks heavily. Not every day but every 4 or 5 days and then it is for 4 or 5 days straight. Sometimes he'll wake up in the middle of urinating but sometimes he'll sleep right through it. I know this is not normal but I have drank many times and this has not happened.

Medically, what could be wrong with him and should I be worried?

Drinking will do damage to the liver for sure. And (not limited to) the bladder also. I would suggest he see an nephrologist (Kidney specialist) to check for damage. And while he is there, they can also have a liver function study done to see the extent (if any) has been done to the liver.

I wish you the best,
Carrie

peeing on self while asleep
I know someone that pees on their self when asleep. He has had recent medication changes. Could this effect it? He has never done this before.

That's a serious problem...
There's really something with his kidney. I've known a lot of heavy drinkers and there seems to be no problem with that. Knowing that his intake of alcohol is too much, his liver may be damaged. I may not be Doctor to prove that scientifically but considering the fact you have stated Ms. Jillysue,.

Not to Worry.. It is not serious, but heavy drinking is!!
If there was anything wrong with his bladder and liver and kidneys I believe he would urinate the bed all the time, regardless of whether he has been drinking or not. When you go to sleep your body and brain is heavily sedated and slows down. So does all of your organs which explains why every morning when you sit up and your metabolism gets moving again your body awakens and you immediately feel the urge to use the bathroom. When you drink however, your mind is conscience while your body is sedated. Plus drinking increases the volume of liquid in the bladder so the body hurries to rid the body of the toxins, thus making you urinate more frequently than normal. Since the mind is in a dream-like state sometimes heavy drinkers actually believe they have literally gotten up and went into the bathroom and urinated when in reality they are still physically in bed asleep! Others are so drunk that they literally pass out completely and once the bladder is filled so much that it cannot with hold any more liquid it will release it and without conscience control because of being passed out, the individuals body will release urine subconsciencely.
