Q: Urgency of bleeding episodes during pregnancy
asked by: DoctorQuestion on September 7th, 2009
hello,
My question is not for me. It's for my pregnant girl friend. She was deemed pregnant at 8 weeks a couple of days ago. She has spotted dark red/ burgandy with one clot. I know this means miscarriage but hey I'm no doctor. What do you guys think?

Given the data you reported (dark red/burgundy spotting with one clot), your girlfriend needs immediate medical attention. Every bleeding episode(spotting too) in pregnancy needs to be examined as soon as possible. Sometimes it might indicate a miscarriage, but not always. The bleeding might originate from the placenta, especially if the fetus is embedded close to or directly on the inner opening of the cervix.

This condition is a closed placenta praevia. In this case, when the uterus grows, the surface on which the placenta is attached stretches and might become insufficient for the placenta.

Your girlfriend should go as soon as possible to a gynecologist or at least an emergency service to try to diagnose the actual condition. A physical examination and an ultrasound scan are highly likely to be needed for a definitive diagnosis.
