Q: Urge to urinate after sex
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 20th, 2009
I have begun having intercourse (with my first and only partner) in the past few months and I have noticed that after sex, I have a strong urge to urinate even though I do not have much to get rid of. When I do urinate I have a burning sensation and I feel swollen and dry. I have had problems with ovarian cysts before but I was put on birth control to regulate those issues. I have had urinary tract infections many times before associated with my ovarian cysts but whatever this is is only after intercourse for a shorter amount of time than a regular UTI and is a slightly different sensation. What is it? What can I do to fix it? (I don't know if this has any effect on the matter, but I am on Tri-Sprintec 28 and my doctor has cleared me to take three consecutive packages before taking the placebo week so that I only have a period once every 3 months).

Hello and welcome to eHealth Forum!

If you have just become sexually active and suffer from urge to urinate, a burning sensation and a sensation of dryness that lasts for some time after intercourse, then what you have is probably honeymoon cysitis. This is a type of UTI that develops in people especially women who have sex for the first time.

Drink plenty of water. You can also drink cranberry juice. After intercourse it would be good to clean the private parts well. It is infact good to urinate after sexual activity to flush the bacteria.

Also consult your doctor for a course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs and to get a urine examination done. Hope this helps. Take care!
