I am a 28 year old male. I have reddish-white splotches across my chest ranging in size from a pea to quarter sized and larger. They do not itch, nor are they raised from the skin. I have had these splotches for a few years, though they seem to be slowly spreading as the years go on. I am concerned because I have very fair skin, and I am somewhat suseptable to different skin rashes, although they always clear up by themselves, except for these splotches. Does anyone have any idea what they could be? p.s. - I haven't seen a doctor in over 10 years since I have no health insurance, and since I am usually in good health, although my health has seem to deteriorate lately.

Hi,

Welcome to the ehealthforum. I am glad to help you out. Your concern is regarding the rash that you have on the chest. One of the possibilities that can present with such rash which disappears with sun exposure is of pityriasis versicolor. It is a common skin infection caused by the yeast Malassezia furfur. This skin disease commonly affects adolescents and young adults, especially in warm and humid climates.

It may present with pale rash which clears up with treatment and the skin eventually tans normally with sun exposure. I sincerely suggest you to consult a dermatologist and get it evaluated. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations, and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care.
