HI. I am a 20 year old female who does not have a period very often but when i have my period it is HORRIBLE!! I had severe pain in my lower abdomen like 5 times but it would last only 20 minutes or so and it happened mainly when i drank alcohol. Any amount of alcohol. I started seeing light blood after sex and had some discharge at some point even a gross odor. Then i started bleeding and it was a steady flow of light blood that lasted about 2 weeks. It got worse everyday. I freaked out and went to the express care as i don't have a doctor or insurance yet. He said that i had bacterial vaginosis. i am supposed to pick the prescription up at 6 today for clindamycin. The bleeding has doubled. Im not sure if I am getting my period with what was going on, but im sure that the earlier bleeding was not my period. Im not sure that the doctor was even right...or that he cared even. I know it could be a Lot of things, but i figured i would try this out. Thanks a lot.

Take the medication. It won't hurt you, even if the diagnosis is wrong. If he is wrong, he won't listen to you unless you've tried the medication and told him it doesn't work--that's just how doctor's are.

I would recommend going to a gynecologist and getting a full check-up. Do you only get your period once in a while because you are on the pill or is your period just that irregular? Either way, you need to make sure nothing more is going on.

i would take the medication to see if it works.
someone on this site said they had horrible periods and they took palmetto herbs and it helped a lot. there's a name for women who gets bad pain during periods. you can research this and find out what you can do to prevent yourself from having it.

your irregular period could be from a couple of reasons. you would have to go to a doctor to be sure. please dont allow not having any insurance stop you from seeing a doctor.

do you have a family planning center in your area that's free or low cost.
i had abnormal bleeding last year and i found out i have a cyst on my ovary. just finding this out took a lot of doctors visits and an ultra sound from a gyn. specialist.
then my menses started to get very heavy, and last for 3 weeks every other month. my doctor preform surgery on me a hysteroscopy (camera) and D&C (scrap lining of uterus). he put me on the depo, and i bleed for another 1 1/2 month, then i was put on birth control pills which regulate my period.
i had to go through the process of elimination of miscarriage, fibroids, cancer, tumors, infections. etc.
they just told me i have hormonal imbalance and put me on the pill.

It was really weird. I was alone and scared Sad. but im going to start the meds tomorrow and i am surely gonna have it all checked out. I just got married and about to get on tricare. Cancer runs in my family, so im really scared.

Thanks Again!!

Don't start thinking cancer right now. Go to a gynecologist if you are worried about that and she will do some tests to rule things out.

the point of telling you my story is to say that only the doctor can tell you what's wrong with you.
if doctors' dont find any problems (cancer, tumor, fibroids, infections) then they'll say that you have an inbalance hormones and the only way to regulate your period is to put you on the pill. this can also stop your cramps.

Excessive vaginal bleeding
I'm 48, have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and have been bleeding heavily during my period for years. I often hemmorage and am given Norethindrone. Since October of '08, I bled for 58 days straight. Now I've been bleeding for three weeks but have lots of pain in my ovaries. I'm told I don't have cysts, fibroids and because I also have diabetes, the gyn doesn't want to do a hysterectomy. I am worn out! Anyone have any ideas?

Olm,
your not going to like my answer!!
it took my doctor, a ob/gyn, and a second opinion ob/gyn doctor a whole year to figure out what's wrong with me and what to do.
i was spotting for weeks, my gyn made me go to a place to get a ultrashound done. i found out i have a cyst on my ovary.
my gyn gave me a ob/gyn doctor who would simple give me an utltra sound every month.
so three months goes by and i said can you tell me why i m bleeding spotting, the next month bleed really heavy. he told me it's my hormones.
o.k, can you do something about it please!!!!!!
so he puts me on birth control. i was mad i had to speak up for him to do this. as if i want to keep bleeding for weeks.
my primary doctor got mad at the ob/gyn doctors response to me so he gave me a referral to another one.
the second ob/gyn who scheduled me for a hysteroscopy (camera) and D&c surgery with depo shot.
so after that i was fine, but bleed again for 1 1/2 months.
so i decided for myself to get back on the pill and it stopped the bleeding. why did the doctor put me on the depo knowing i have a bleeding problem. the depot shot makes your periods irregular.
they ruled out cancer, and everything else. so they told me i had dysfunctional uterine bleeding (meaing they didnt know why i was bleeding).
so you have to go through the painful experience of trial and error and let the doctor find out whats wrong with you.
be persistant and ask questions. i go to my doctors office with a list of questions b/c he rushes out the office.
