My mother is 63 and is in good health. For the past 3 yrs she has developed unexplained allergic reactions. Her symptoms range from having hives, swollen lips, eyes, large welts that are hot to touch and now today, a swollen hand. It seems to be getting worst and more frequent. The longest she went without any symptoms was 1 month. Yet she could not rule out what she had changed in her food intake. She now has hives some almost daily. She takes Reactine but I am not sure it is safe for her to take this so often. Do you have any suggestions? She went for allergy test and they said she is allergic to dust, but arent we all? My mother seems to think that things always get worst when she goes to town( wal-mart and such) which leads her to believe it could be the lighting in large stores. I googled this and I dont find anywhere that fluroscent lights could cause this sort of reactions. Please help as this is getting frightening and I dont want my mom to be limited to her home.

Well, there is an allergy to light, photosensitivity, but that might not be the case as it sounds too severe. My mother and I both get frequent hives. I spent a year and a half getting hives chronically. They would start out as hives and turn into big welts all over my body. I don't know about the other symptoms, but the hives could come from absolutely ANYTHING. Heat, Cold, soap, metals. Anything. So there's really no telling unless you want to spend a very long time having tests done on her, bloodwork and such, to determine what exactly she is allergic to that would cause hives. Steroids are best for hives, but I really think you should take her to a doctor to figure out what is wrong because, as for the other symptoms, i'm stumped. good luck.
