Hi,

I am unemployed.

I would like to know if I can legally be considered as self-employed to pay a cheapest health insurance coverage (family plan), please ?

Thank you very much.

Pepusse.

Okay,

Actually, I just arrived with my wife in the USA and I don't know how an health insurance coverage works in Massachusetts...
an insurance agent made me a proposal in which we can pay cheaper if I am declared as self-employed instead of unemployed....

the insurance agent suggested me to do that and it was cheaper. he told me he did that for many people....

thank you

Wow, if the insurance agent suggested it and you can get it cheaper, then I would say go for it....but before doing so...

However I would ask if you have to prove that you are self-employed, like a license and other sort of things that would prove that you are.

I would want to make sure that I had all my bases covered and not pain myself into a corner.

Don't do it
Pepusse:

This is highly unethical and the agent is going after the commission on your policy. Turn the agent into the Divison of Insurance. Here's what will happen. First they will ask you for documentation that you are legally self-employed. They might ask to see your quarterlies, your tax ID number (s.s.), etc. You do have to prove you are actually self-employed. If the agent walks you through the application and tells you how to fill out the application so it will get approved, do it, take the application and turn that person in. Why? On your first claim, the insurance carrier will investigate your application (and they do!) Lets say heart surgery for example, they find you really are not self employed, all of your claims from day one that they have paid are regained by the insurance carrier and the bills are come flooding into you. There may be years of them. Your hospital bills are unpaid and you will have to pay them, you will go broke. You can tell them, well I'm insured, and they will tell you ..... and you will say, my agent said .... and they will say too bad.... your finances could be ruined for good. If you want confirmation, always call the insurance carrier and tell them "I am unemployed, can I put on the application that I am self-employed and get self-employed insurance" They will say NO! Don't do it! Turn these money grubbing insurance agents in. They need to sell honestly so you don't get hurt. I am an insurance producer, but I also worked undercover to keep things like this from affecting patients (people) who don't know any different. It may be cheaper, but not in the long run. Dont' try to pull the wool over their eyes, it won't work.

Call Insurance Carriers Directly and ask questions. Tell them you don't have much money, unemployed and what would they suggest. If your unemployment is temporary, you can get a temporary insurance policy (cheap) and only covers high dollar tickets like heart surgeries etc until you get another job. It's a bridge. Some insurance companies have them and some don't.

Good Luck

Sonora Insurance
I have Sonora Insurance with R. Paul Hulsebusch.
, there has been controversy about him but the insurance is great. I just broke my leg(which is why I'm sitting here at my computer) and they covered it, no problem. Things will go best if you do some research yourself, don't rely on forum posters to tell you about what to do for your health, though they have good advice.
