Q: Undiagnosed Stomach Pain

My 19 year old daughter was admitted to the emergency room in April 2008 with severe lower right abdominal pain. At first everyone was positive it was appendicitis but CAT scan was negative. Blood work was normal. A slew of other tests were done. All were clean and no sign of a problem. Even another CAT scan because they couldn't believe the first time it wasn't appendicitis.

She was examined by a surgeon, an OBGYN, a Rheumatologist, a Gastroenterologist. No one found anything wrong. She was in the hospital 9 days. On the 8th day, she said the pain seemed to be lessening. On the 9th day, she was pain free and dismissed. No one knows why the pain went away. The best guess the doctor said was a virus somewhere in her lower abdomen but, he said it was very rare for someone her age to have it because it was something that normally only occurred in little children. Again, this was just a guess.

She went pain free and had no type of stomach problem since then until now, on Feb 2, the pain returned. Again she was taken to the ER and then admitted to the hospital. (Different one, this time). Again CAT scans, blood work and many other tests all normal.

She is on pain medication every two hours. Can't hardly sleep. She gets a shot, falls asleep for hour then pain wakes her up and she awake for another hour until she can get another shot.

Her doctor told us today that he can't find anything wrong with her and that perhaps her problem is psychological / mental. He is releasing her, (she's still in severe pain) and sending her home without any pain management plan, .

Her mother and I know her better than anyone and we strongly disagree. She is normal girl who has a very nice boyfriend that she is in love with. She is in college loves it, and is doing very well. She just made Dean's List in FALL 2008. All she wants is for the pain to go away so she can get out of the hospital, get back to school and get back to her life. Her mother and I would bet our lives that something very real is causing her pain.

Has anyone out there ever heard of problem that would cause lower right abdomen pain but apparently not show up in any tests known to mankind? Please help? Thanks.

sounds similar to my daughter
quick question... How long has the pain been going on? You posted on Feb 5, 2009 but in the post you have April 2008 talk about going to the hospital in February.

The info on my daighter is listed under "my daughter is experiencing abdominal pain" if you want to read it.

Undiagnosed Stomach Pain
She has had only two attacks. First one was in April 2008. Lasted about 10 days. The second (and last) attack happened Feb 2, 2009. Again, lasted about 10 days.

We have an appointment 2/19 with a gastroenterologist from University of Pennsylvania but...., I'm afraid there's not much he'll be able to do when she is not experiencing symptoms.

Thanks.

how did they manage her pain
When she had the pain, was she given antibiotics or antiflamitory medication to help manage the pain?

My daughter is 17 and had a similar incident and it ended up that she had a rupturd ovarian cyst. They did a laproscopy and flushed her abdominal cavity and put her on a low dose of birth control. Has she been to a ob/gyn. If a cyst ruptures there is no visible sign but, the fluid can irritate the abdominal cavity.

Having the same problem with my step-son
My stepson has been complaining about abdominal pain for 2 years now. He has been to several different hospitals and they can't seem to find anything wrong. He insists there is something wrong. Personally I don't know, after 2 years of tests you would think they would have found something. So like you I am very frustrated. Is there such thing as phantom pains or thinking there is something wrond and bringing it on yourself??

To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure if he was tested for that. I know that they said they had run every test pertaining to anything to do with a stomach problem and couldn't find anything. I will have to look into it. Thanks for your reply. Was that the problem with your child?

Still waiting to see. It can only be detected by testing when she is having an actual attack so...., we're waiting for the next one.

Oh really! I'm sorry to hear that. I will definitely ask the doctor when he has his next attack to see if they already checked for that.He is still having the pain tonight but will be going to the doctors tomorrow so I will have him mention it and if I get any info I will definitely pass it on to you. Thank you again for your input, I really appreciate it.
