hi, i didnt really know where to post this, couldnt find a forum for chest pain! lol.
so for the last 7 days or so iv had really bad chest pain on my left side over my heart area. i went to the doctor who was rubbish and said all sounded normal in my lungs and it was probably due to drinking too much caffeine. i knew that wasnt what it was but have since cut out all caffeine to prove its not that! then i went to A and E coz i was in so much pain and the dr hadn't done anything. they did ECG and chest xray and bloods which were all normal. However my blood pressure was rather high - 156/96 which is unusual for me, and my pulse was high. they said it could be a response to pain, but i thought that usually made bp go down? so they concluded that although i could have sprained some sort of muscle, they thought it was indigestion. I know its not indigestion but hey gave me some antiacid pills which i took and havent helped at all! so not that.

the pain comes and goes, its hard to explain how it feels but its not made worse by moving which u would have thought it would if it were a sprain. not made worse by eating. no stomach ache. any ideas? it infuriates me that if nothing shows up in tests they seem to think ur making it up.

by the way im 23.

Do you find the chest wall tender or painful when you press a finger at the location of the pain?
Are you experiencing symptoms of coughing or shortness of breath?
When do you usually get the worse chest pain?
Do you get excessive acid coming up into the esophagus?

no it wasn't painful when pressing, it feels like its deep inside.
i am not coughing, or it doesnt hurt more if i do. initially it felt like it hurt to breathe in deeply but im not so sure it does now and no not really short of breath.
no acid coming up that i believe, nothing feels any different in the esophagus/throat etc.
the chest pain isnt really made worse by anything-albeit i havent tried exercising since! moving doesnt make it worse and so i didnt think it could be a muscle sprain. it comes and goes at different times of day, sometimes its bad at nights and sometimes as soon as i get up.
today i feel like the ribs at my side under my left arm is a little bit achey but its a different sort of pain so may be unrelated.

Some people can feel chest pains due to neuropathy (any disease or malfunction of the nerves).

How does the chest pain radiate?

Have you been tested for neuropathy with nerve conduction studies or electromyography?

One of the main reason for neuropathy is diabetes.

they think because bloods etc havnt shown anything it must be something like a strained intercostal muscle. its just odd i havnt done anything to strain a muscle that i know of, and it doesnt hurt when i stretch or cough etc.

i havnt got diabetes and i do check my blood sugars at work (haha) which are always fine.

the pain stays in the same place really, over my heart area, which is like a stabbing pain. and then sometimes around the sides of my ribs and up to my arms i get a more achy pain that could be a strain. the two types of pain are different. the heart area one signif worse. muscular pain could take 6 weeks to get better, but hasnt really got any better so far and its been 3+ weeks.

no havnt had any nerve studies. what tests do they do for that? had CPR bloods taken the other day which apparently shows inflamation, should get those results next week, else i think theyr giving up with me Sad

Elz100,
I have same identical symptoms. and same results and tests that you have had. im 33 year old..perfect physical condition. Was US Marine for past 6 years. just got out. i could outrun a 18 year olds. my doctors prescribed vicodin for a while till it stopped helping me, and i only had pains for about 4 months or so. few days ago went to emergency with way too much pain, after 3 shots of morpheine finally pain was made manageable, but never went away. ER doctor had big eyes, cause have never seen it before( by the way he is about my age). I can only say that about 10 years ago i have had same pains, except a lot lighter, and doctor said i have a ulcer, and it radiates pain to where it seemes like heart pain. he prescribed me Pepcid and after taking it for few weeks i was all good. but i was also under a lot stress running my own business that i have sold eventually about same time went to see Doctor. this time i have also have had acid refluxes and heartburns that become pretty bad and often. pepsid have stopped helping as much. i have switched to Prilosec and it did help for some time, then about a month later it returned. what i'm trying to say is that i noticed that my pains started with heartburns, and refluxes. but now those have been taken care of, but pain got even worse. i suspect that ulcers caused by stress a lot of times, and this could be stress related, although i have always considered my self cool headed and never shown my emotions. please let me know if anything has helped you and i will in return do same. hopefully there is a specialist outthere that can find us with this. i found out by googling this problem, that there are literraly thousands people with same symptoms and no diagnosis!!!!

I am having the same trouble
Hi,

I am 27 and am having exactly the same experiences. I have had the pain on and off for well over 6 months. I am tender in the centre of the chest and the pain usually comes on at night along the left side of the chest under the right breast and can intensify with breathing.

I have had an endoscapy recently which was also clear aswell as all the blood tests, xrays etc. I have been in a and e at least 4 times but they send me home as all tests are clear. The docs have prescribed Omeprezole for the acid but the pain is still there. The docs were thinking it could be Pleurodynia but although it has the same symptoms, it is only supposed to last up to two weeks which have obviously been and gone a long time ago.

I am back to see two specialists in hospital in the next few weeks so I will let you know if they can come up with any better suggestions

Chest pain with hx. of acid reflux
I am a 30 yr old female. I have had acid reflux for several years. A few days ago I had a sharp pain to my chest with difficulty breathing. My PCP recommended that I go to the ER to be checked out. I felt like I wasted my time and money since useless test ( EKG, Blood work and Chest X-ray) came up normal. I was released from the hospital with no diagnosis. It has been 3 days now and thd pain in my chest subsides for short time frames. I a would like some answers. I plan to see a specialist asap. It was nice to read that I am not alone.

Acid Reflux?
Hmmm...I'm not in the medical profession in anyway, but I've had digestive problems, which I attributed to acid reflux. You may have the same, but it's hard to tell. Do the pains accompany stress or any other outside stimuli? Have you noticed pains after eating certain food? You might want to monitor your diet. See if there's any correlation between food type or pain.

If you decide to change your diet, you can see if there are any changes to pain and review those observations with your doctor.

Hope that helps.

Chest pain spasms
Reading your comments I can understand your concerns.
I am 68 year male with similar experience. always fit and regular exercise. had slight pain for years jogging up a slight incline, a short rest and then I could run for the rest for the day. over time the pain got more severe until I contact my dr. I do have a hi/hernia and this may be the problem. However pain got so severe when I started to walk - I couldn,t. Eventually these pains started when at rest - serious spasam over left breastbone with paralysing effect lasting up to 15mins - also reoccuring at nightime while asleep. Obviously hospitalised after a serious bout. All ECG,bloods etc. clear. Diagnosis Musclerskeletal problem. Still comes and goes and getting worse - awaiting next consultation.
In the meantime trying acupuncture and then dye test.
i should say that when the spasams clear I can then walk for 7 miles no problem as is a regular circuit but I should add that a very fast pace would start to trigger an event. Hope this helps and perhaps find someone with similar problem that can help.

have you considered trigger points in the pec major and pec minor these cause pain that radiates across the chest and under and down the arms.
