Q: Undiagnosed bumps on the tongue
asked by: DoctorQuestion on April 30th, 2009
I have bumps on the back of my tongue that do not hurt.
There is also a white film on my tongue.
At times the top side of my tongue towards the end, appears to have cracks.
Could this be caused from chewing too much nicotine gum?
My skin is developing a thin paper appearance.
The bumps do not hurt.
I first noticed them when my denture broke about 5 months ago and I used the denture repair kit. It was a little abrasive until I got a new denture. At one point bumps were towards the front top side on my tongue. Now they are just on the back top side of my tongue and mainly on the left side.

It can not be determined what the bumps are without seeing them. If the presence of the bumps is the only symptom you found, then you might be mistaking the bumps as pathological with the normal circumvallate papillae which are located on the upper side of the tongue near its root.

You might want to visit your family doctor to check if the bumps you reported are something else and if the white film is caused by a fungal infection (usually called candidiasis due to the most frequent fungal cause).
