I am a 28yr old male. Athletic build. Active. Have not been weight training for a year or so. I have been suffering from mid back pain for 2 yrs. Lower Thoracic region mostly. Also some posterior rib pain. I have had a Bone scan, CT, MRI's and all are normal. i've tried stretching (slightly painful), ice, heat, message therapy and they are not much help. The pain is the worst when I am carrying my 2 yr old in front of me. Can't do for more than a minute or so. Also when sitting in a wooden chair or so. Pain when I wake up and also in my neck too. Pain when twisting my spine. The message therapist said it seems as if the muscle on the sides of my spine is like a steel rod. The nuerosurgeon says I should try acupuncture. Have not yet. Obviously something is going on but noone can pinpoint it. I did not have a specific injury either. I can play a round of golf and that seems to help temporarily. Not sure why. I cannot water ski anymore because holding the rope in front puts a major strain on my back. I have tried Darvecet and mobic. None work. I have another kid on the way and cannot carry my daughter right now and would love to get this fixed. I can't go the rest of my life with this pain. Have not seen a Chiro either. Have seen my primary, neurosurgeon, orthopedic, PT, and massage therapist. Any ideas?

Its a good idea to get a hold of your radiology reports its amazing how much can be wrong with your spine when doctors say everything is normal. I know its a bit hard on doctors as most of them have a lot of integrity.

if you don't have any herniated discs or compressed nerves i would consider chiropractic, the vertebrae can become misalighned, and doctors and radiologists usually ignore this unless it is severe, and i believe there is good evidence this can be a source of pain but take some time to find a good one.

Just curious- but do you have any form of scoliosis? Might be something to ask about if there are no disc or nerve problems. Were the image studies all negative for any compression fractures, stenosis, or spondylosis/spondylolisthesis?

If it's muscle pain and/or rigidity, Darvocet or any pain medication won't be a big help. Ask your doctor about Skelaxin- it's safe to take and drive and have a normal life without the nasty hangover effect that Flexeril has, plus a lot of pain clinics and standard medical offices have a ton of Skelaxin samples or a free month's worth coupon, just something to think about =) Good luck with your back, I know how frustrating it can be when you're young (I'm only 23) but you feel so broken and like you're trapped in an old body... or in my case living with a half metal body that doesn't even work right >.<
