I sprained my ankle 9 months ago when I fell down my steps. I felt a snap, and fell down. I had trouble walking on it immediately after. When I sat down that night and rested the heel of my injured foot, I felt my heel move and immediately took my heel off the floor. I did not go to the ER that night. My ankle and lower leg swelled up, became bruised and painful. Limping became very noticeable. Noticed my foot also became way more inverted than the good foot. Went to my family doctor a week later, who said I probably sprained my ankle, ordered xrays and suggested I see a foot doctor. Got the xrays, saw the foot doctor, who said the xrays were normal. Physical therapy was ordered. Started the physical therapy then had issues with my foot, so I begged the foot doctor for an MRI. MRI, which was done two months after initial injury, showed partially torn and edematous ATFL ligament, fluid in the peroneal tendon sheaths, bone bruise and bone marrow edema on the posterior medial portion of the talus, some signal in the Achilles tendon. Doctor ordered me back to physical therapy. After completing therapy, I was able to dorsiflex, evert/invert my foot, but still was unable to plantarflex fully and push off with my toes fully when walking or doing exercises. My foot still looked more inverted as well, and I began to get disabling heel pain from walking on a crooked foot. Had a cortisone shot in the ankle capsule because of synovitis. Had more xrays which revealed what looked like rheumatoid arthritis in the ankle mortise, which was ruled out. Last doctor said there was nothing they could do for me and wants me to go to the pain clinic. Upon the advice of a friend who was a former medic, I wore higher heeled shoes to take the pressure off the heel and to attempt to straighten out my foot, which actually worked. I still get heel pain. It's not as bad when I am in higher heeled shoes, its worse in my bare feet. I do notice my heel hangs down further on the injured foot as opposed to the uninjured foot. I am plantarflexing a little better, but still not fully, and it looks like my heel is not being pulled up as far as it should be when I attempt to do so. Everything is tight, very tight from my calf all the way to my toes. It hurts sometimes because its so tight. It sometimes feels itchy and burning on the bottom of my feet. I get a burning sensation where the calf muscle meets the Achilles on the right side, and right behind my ankle as well. I was also getting Charley Horses in this leg more often than normal. Could have I had an undiagnosed partial Achilles tendon tear? What can I do to ease up the tightness in my calves and feet? Am I prone to Achilles tendon problems because of my tight muscles and tendons?
