Uncle , thin fluid discharge

My uncle had a discharge of thin fluid from umbilicus area surgery( mesh used was Prolene in august 2009). The doctors advised to replace the mesh ,In may 2010 he undergone a surgery and the mesh is replaced( Marlex Mesh). Though the fluid has not stopped ,so the doctor drained the naval through needle last week and suggested the removal of mesh is the only way to overcome this problem. Is it ok to remove the mesh? what are the post operative issues? will this be the permanent solution for infection?
