Umbilical hernia repair recovery time

Hi, I had umbilical hernia repair a week ago using a mesh, however I have taken off the dressing today and noticed that the hernia site is still very large and looks as though the hernia is still there and if anything it is now bigger than it was before.........could this just be swelling, or is it possible that the repair hasn't worked???? Thanks.

While early recurrence of hernias after surgery does occur, it is more likely that you have a "seroma," which is a collection of fluid underneath the skin. In most cases, this fluid collection will resolve over a period fo 4 to 6 weeks. Occasionally, it will persist, and will have to be drained with a needle by the surgeon.
