
What causes ulcers?
Peptic ulcers can be caused by a number of factors, including eating food that is too much acidic. Smoking tobacco or excessive alcohol consumption can further increase the volume and concentration of stomach acid and irritate and erode the mucous lining of your stomach. Another common cause of peptic ulcer disease is the regular use of pain medications. Stress may aggravate symptoms of peptic ulcers, delay healing or contribute to the development of ulcers. Most stomach ulcers, however, are caused by a bacterial infection called Helicobacter pylori, or H. pylori for short.
