I have had really bad stomach soreness, rib soreness that radiates to the middle of my back. Both sides of my ribs are sore. I also have stomach soreness and indigestion with gas. Are these normal symptoms of an ulcer or gerd? Particularly the rib soreness that radiates to the back? I have had an upper GI barium which the md said was showing possible gerd. I was on prilosec twice per day which stopped working and he then put me on nexium 40mg twice daily which helps somewhat. I also was diagnosed with an benign hepatic hemangioma. I'm wondering if anyone had any comments on my symptoms etc. thanks in advance

Stomach pain, indigestion and rib pain that radiates to the middle of my back can be found in both conditions (peptic ulcer and GERD). Even more, both conditions can be present in the same time. GERD is not a separately defined disorder like peptic ulcer but it is more like a symptom of several upper digestive tract conditions including peptic ulcer. Peptic ulcer (of the stomach or duodenum) can't be always seen with upper GI barium passage so you can request upper endoscopy (gastroscopy) to confirm or exclude peptic ulcer of the stomach or duodenum.
