Q: Ulcer in kids

My 12 year lod daughter has been having stomach pain for about 4 months now and after numerous doctors visits they think it may be an ulcer. She is now on Zantac twice a day to see if this will help. I am wondering if there is a special diet that might help relieve some of her pain so she can return to a full day of school. The pain seems to get worse after she eats lunch and by 2:00 she is usually sent home from school because the pain is so bad. By 5:30 - 6:00 the pain seems to go away. Does drinking milk sooth an ulcer and should we try eliminating anything in particular?

I have a few thoughts in your daughter's csse. Is she taking any medications such as ibuprofen that might be prolonging some of the symptoms as well as worsening them? In regards to diet, avoidance of caffeine may have some benefit for her. Lastly, you may want to have her checked for a gastric infection by a bacteria called helicobacter pylorri. Infection with this bacteria leads to stomach ulcers mainly in adults but can cause problems in children as well.
