Hysterectomy Answer A6670
Hysterectomy is a surgery in which the uterus is removed. Total abdominal hysterectomy means that the complete uterus is removed (both the corpus and the cervix). Subtotal hysterectomy means that only the fundus of the uterus is removed, where as the cervix remains intact. Radical hysterectomy means that the uterus is removed completely together with the upper vagina and parametrium.

A hysterectomy is performed: in certain types of reproductive system cancers, in severe endometriosis, after giving birth in severe cases of placenta praevia or placenta acreta, or as prophylaxis in patients with a high risk of reproductive system cancers.

Since the hysterectomy is a surgery and it takes time for the wound and sutures to heal, having penetrative intercourse before six weeks is not recommended. Masturbation or sexual play that does not require vaginal penetration is allowed without any consequences. So, you might want to enjoy this before returning to vaginal intercourse. Please note, that anal penetration might also damage the tissue and cause vaginal bleeding because of the close positions of both the wound and the rectum (the final part of the intestines).

In the end, you might want to consult with your gynecologist as to what kind of sexual play would be safe for you based on the actual type of hysterectomy and the speed of healing.

Remove cervix or not?
I'm having a partial (uterus only) procedure and I'm wondering about having my cervix removed as well. From what I've been reading about "mini periods" (I'd have to shoot myself!!), it seems like it may be better to take both. Also, and here is my embarrassing question... Any idea how will this affect sexual sensation, if at all?
Thoughts?
Thanks.

Seeing the doctor will not answer this as he has already answered the original poster's question, I will add my response to this...If you want him to answer this, please readdress the question to him...

I had my complete Hysterectomy at age 47...I was completely emptied...Cervix, Uterus and Ovaries...Sex is awesome...I have never looked back...In fact for me it got better as I had a tilted either cervix or uterus (I can't remember what the doctor told me)...I found that because it now was a straight shot in for my husband's penis, that the satisfaction and erotic feelings became a new joy in my life...And may I add, it has never stopped...

I wish you well...
Caroline
