Q: Type 1 Diabetes genetics?

My mother has had Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis since she was 19, she is now 47. She was born with Type 1 Diabetes. How much of a chance is it that I would get it? Or Type 2? Or Would it have skipped a generation onto my children? My father has no genes of diabetes what so ever, so I'm curious to know my chances of being born with Type 1 as well? Please help if you have any answers.

God Bless You All !

Well, the good news is that Type 2 diabetes has a stronger genetic basis than Type 1 Diabetes...and your mother has NOT been diagnosed with Type 2. Type 1 diabetes appears to be triggered by viral infections so that for those who have inherited the susceptibility, type 1 diabetes mellitus seems to require an environmental trigger.

To be sure, you will need a diagnosis and it might be good to go to your doctor and request a blood test. Most usually, you will be asked to not eat for 10 hours, and then the doctors will measure the level of sugar in your blood --- a "fasting glucose level".
