ok, sit on the toilet, relax, and use your index finger to find the vaginal entrance. Once you find it, you insert the tampon at sort of a slant, up into the opening, and gently push it up as far as you can comfortably. You should not be able to feel it in there if it is inserted correctly. Yes you can do both bodily functions with it inserted. The best ones to use are the ones without an applicator, that require you to used your finger to push them in. I think you can get a better feel for where it is going with those. tampons are great, and once you start using them, you'll never want to be without them!

i think that between the instruction sheet and the advice above, you pretty much have the idea covered. i have a few suggestions for you however.

1) big on RELAX...the first couple of times i tried to insert a tampon, i was so uptight you couldn't get a greased pin up in me with a hammer. haha...a little vagina, pin, and hammer humor for you! don't try to insert a tampon when you're pressed for time or when you aren't in the right frame of mind. sit on the toilet for a minute, relax, take some nice deep cleansing breaths, and take your time.

2) don't put too much pressure on yourself to have it work. just "try" it...if it doesn't work, don't flip out - just try it again or try it another time. you will have your period for many years, and you have that long to look forward to finding out how to use a tampon successfully. take the pressure off.

3) using tampons is a convenience. remember that it's not a necessity...right? it is a convenient thing to do and it has advantages over using pads. personally, i use pads 90% of the time because i think it's a healthier choice to make, but i'm not denying that tampons have their proper place (no pun intended)there i go with the vaginal humor again.

4) worst case scenario, get your mom to coach you through it, or even ask one of your friends. i don't mean have them guide your hand or anything like that, but have someone talk you through it on the cell phone or through the bathroom door...that kinda thing. just a little confidence booster with some "ready to answer questions" kind of backup!

good luck raydee...i hope it works for you!

Just keep practicing, and if you can't get the hang of it, you can have a female doctor show you how. It's worth the effort!

use brand name tampon called pearls. it is soft plastic that slides in, and the tip is shaped like a oval.
i m comparing this to the cardboard kind, that hurts me when i use it.
i use nothing but the pearl kind or an imitation kind.
i usually put it at the end of my clitoris and slide it backwards..........you cant miss it.

Definitely don't use the cardboard ones if this is your first time. It took me a while to figure it out, but you will.. just keep trying.

Early on, it may be easier to lay down when you put it in, just until you get used to doing it. Or, if you don't want to lay down, try putting one leg up on something, like the bath tub. That may make it easier.

I agree that the plastic applicators are easier to use (I've never tried the ones without an applicator). If it is uncomfortable once it's in, then it probably wasn't put in far enough. I know it's a little worrisome to put it in too far at first, but as long as you keep track of the string, nothing bad is going to happen. I also find that pulling the string forward and kind of keeping it tucked in between the labia is more comfortable. I know it sounds weird, but it keeps the string from getting pulled when you move around and making things uncomfortable.

Like other people have said, if it doesn't work, don't worry about it. I personally didn't find tampons comfortable until I was 20.

they even have tampons for teens. i accidentally bought a pack and i had to change so often because it was so small.

another thing is you have to make sure you put it in far enough because if you dont it could swell up with urine and feel uncomfortable.
but if you can get used to it, you can just use pads. some people dont like tampons!

I really want to use tampons though because I'm a swimmer and that just throws me off my routine when i have to wait almost an entire week before i can get in the water. But thanks for the encouragement

I used to have this problem also. I couldn't use them until I was 19, it really hurt and I couldn't get the hang of how to use them. I was able to feel it the whole time, and it was really uncomfortable.

What I found helped is to find a time when you don't have anywhere to rush off to, and have loads of time to just relax and take your time. Take deep breaths to help you stay relaxed, if it helps, sing your favourite song (I know it sounds crazy and weird, but I found it really helped me stay relaxed). If it hurts, stop. Carrying on will just cause you to tense up and that makes it difficult. Take a few deep breaths and try again, or stop and try again later when you are feeling relaxed again.

When you say you can't pee with one in, do you mean it is uncomfortable, or do you mean you PHYSICALLY can't?
If it is the second, I do know what you mean, I have this problem sometimes. I'm not sure why, but when I have one in, it always feels like I cannot empty my bladder completely. I can't work out why this is. Is it a sign that it's not in correctly? I'm not sure, I can't seem to get round it either.

No. If you get it up there and you can no longer feel it, you did it right. But sometimes near the end of your period, if you are too dry up there you might feel it alittle at first.

I don't think it's possible to put it in your bladder, but what I'm thinking is maybe it's not far up enough and is therefore putting pressure on your urethra and that's why it's sometimes difficult to pee with one in. Practice makes perfect though so I reckon we'll both get the hang of it!

I have tried tampons in the past and have never liked them. Every woman will not feel the same way about tampons. If after trying it and following the directions you still have problems just use pads they work just as well.
