Q: 826 Triglicerides

My story is pretty simple, I was trying to get life insurance for myself (wife and two kids) and my prospective carrier did the lipid test and it came back as such:

Tri - 826
Total Chol - 308
HDL-34
LDL-wasn't calculated due to high triglycerides

These levels seemed incredibly bad. I am 40 yrs old, I don't drunk, I don't smoke, I could stand to lose 15 pounds and I am-believe me. I swim laps every night for 30 minutes, play basketball every week, and will be doing more cardio exercise in the future.

I saw my doctor yesterday and after reading these numbers he put me on Lipitor and Tricor. No mention of exercise and diet which I had to bring up and discuss with him. I was hoping to do this naturally (diet and exercise) but perhaps the severity of these numbers tells me I should be taking the drugs in addition to diet and exercise. Any opinions out there on this matter?

Also, I'm on day 2 of the Lipitor and am feeling chest pains...is that common?

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR INPUT

Yes, the drugs are indicative because the levels are so high and LDL calculations would be inaccurate.

In my opinion, continuing to exercise and eating a healthy diet would benefit your lipid profile.

How bad is the chest pain? Does it radiate?

The chest pain has subsided. I wonder how much of it was psycho-sematic.

The lab results I received from my doctor's office came back as such:

Cholstestrol-292
HDL-35.4
Triglycerides-434

A lot better on the triglycerides. I really don't want to take Lipitor or Tricor. I've stepped up my exercise (daily) and am watching what I eat a lot more. Isn't that enough??

Unfortunately, you might have an inherited disorder that won't allow you to lose the amount of bad cholesterol that you need.

If you continue on your regimen of exercising and dieting, and check in a couple of months time there may be significant improvement, or if it is still too high then the doctor may have to suggest drugs, and the condition might be precipitated from a genetic disorder.
