Q: Treatment of Meniere's disease
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 1st, 2009
After a recent diagnosis of Meniere's disease, I have lowered my sodium intake significantly and cut out caffeine. I have been taking lipoflavonoid supplement. This has all been for about 2 weeks. Since I have started my new regiment I feel even worse than before. Is this just coincidence? How long does it usually take for diet changes to kick in so I'm not feeling so dizzy? I stopped taking the lipo-flavonoid supplement yesterday since it seemed like the day after I started taking it is when a new episode kicked in. Any other suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated..such as how much sodium should I consume a day..should I try taking an antihistamine to possibly help relieve some of the pressure?

General Q and A Answer A5246
Current medical status: vertigo with tinnitus
Current medical treatment: lipo-flavoniod and diet changes

The exact cause for Meniere’s disease is not known. Thus the measures you tried might not be successful at all. They do decrease the frequency of the attacks and the intensity of the symptoms in certain patients, but not in everyone. The recommended intake of sodium is 1-2 grams daily. Antihistamines are one of the groups of medications suggested in Meniere’s disease. However, antihistamines should be administered only if prescribed by a doctor.
