Q: treatment for blood in urine ?

For: my dad who is 85; takes vitamins (no medications); and loves all-you-can-eat buffets.
Condition: fluctuating (sometimes large) volume of blood and clots in urine which started nearly a week ago.
Circumstances: Dad feels great. In recent weeks, Dad has increased working in the yard which consists of pulling up trees and many barrels of weeds.
Urinalysis: All negative (no culture taken); the only above-normal reading was the amount of blood in the urine.
Future expectations and planning: Appointment with urologist in a few weeks. We predict that the doctor will take blood tests and dipstick and rule in or rule out cancer/kidney/prostate/bladder/urethra/str ep problems. If no problem is found, what can we do? If a serious problem is found, we don't have much faith in hospitals, (Dad doesn't want CAT scans or X-rays), what can we do?
Dad adds: he is concerned and wants to know if he needs antibiotics, otherwise, it could be nothing at all. He is also concerned about the neighbors' use of fertilizers and pesticides and cats which have kidney problems and poop in our yard.

Hi and Welcome to ehealth

It's a good idea for your dad to see the doctor. They may want to run a few tests as you mentioned; blood and urine tests, they may also do an ultrasound of the kidneys and bladder to rule out anything major. (I hope he's OK).

As for the antibiotics the tests will tell if he needs them.

He sounds like a caring man that he's concerned about the cats with kidney problems. I had a that passed away from kidney failure.

Keep us posted..Best wishes.
