Q: Treatment for an STD
asked by: DoctorQuestion on April 20th, 2009
I took 4 metronidazole 500mg pills 7 days ago and after 2hrs of my partner taking his last 500mg metronidazole pill on a 2 pill a day for a 7 day treatment, we had sex with a condom, but the condom came off, so are we reinfected?

Sexually Transmitted Diseases Answer A6391

If you started your metronidazole treatment before your partner ended his, there is a probability that he did not manage to transmit the infection to you. However, if you had intercourse shortly after you started taking the medication, then transmission might have occurred from you to him, because the quantity of the causative agents might have not been decreased enough to have become harmless.

This dilemma can be easily solved if you have a vaginal swab done and your boyfriend has a urethral swab done. Both swabs have to be taken at the same day and both treatments, if needed, should start on the same day, too.
