Hi, my boyfriend has an psychotic episode and I am looking for some advice or experience stories so that I can have some kind of picture of what's going on. The doctors have not put a diagnosis yet although this is going on for almost 3 months now. It all started in January when he had this really bad crisis. He had been behaving a bit weird before that but nothing to worry about, I thought. First he could not sleep so he didn't sleep for 3 nights in a row when he began to say weird things and being restless, he talked a lot, moved a lot, jumping from one thing to another, then we got into a fight and he went at a friend's house where he smoked some marijuana and then he completely lost it,.He now says that he had a close to death experience and that he saw God in that moment. He was screaming, and dancing and no one could talk to him. I took him to the doctor's and he gave him Depakine and a mood stabilizer and after a week he got better but not completely. After 2 weeks he got worse and his parents took him to another doctor and he stayed in the hospital for a month. Now he is taking wellbutrin, carmomazepin , xanax and RISPERIDONUM and I feel as if he is not getting better. He says he sees the people around him as in a show and he gets easily irritated, he jumps from a subject to another when he talks and he says he feels that people on TV sometimes talk about him , and makes all sorts of unusual connections to the things that are happening to him. He also now likes stuff that he didn't like before, like certain genres of music, and he calls a lot of people all the time, people he hasn't talked to in a long time and who he don’t usually call . Do you think he may have Schizophrenia? Or may be bipolar? he was in a manic state all this time, and unusually happy, feels like singing all the time. Also, I know his brother had the same thing when he was 23 (like my boyfriend )except it lasted much less and his father had some paranoia episodes. I feel scared and I want to make sure that he is given the proper medication, do you have any experience with this? how long will it take for the medication to work? What can I do to help him?

Thanks!

What you are describing sounds like psychosis which is a symptom of several mental illnesses. If he is also manic then it could be bipolar or schizoaffective disorder or something else but only a doctor can tell you that for sure. Make sure he keeps going to the doctor and that the doctor is aware of all the symptoms he is experiencing. Also make sure that he keeps taking his meds. It really depends on the person and the meds taken as to how long it will take for them to kick in. You do say there has been some improvement so that's a good sign. Good luck.
