Digestive and Bowel Disorders Answer A5493
Current medical status: brought 3 yr old daughter to doc on monday for vomiting.. stopped vomiting monday and started diarrhea on tuesday through today (thursday). the docs say that it is a virus and there is nothing for it. daughter has no appetite and is just now finally wanting to drink stuff. everything she drinks wants to come out in form of diarrhea. since monday she has lost 1.5 lbs

Given the symptoms you report (vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite and achy bowel movement), your 3 year old daughter might be experiencing viral gastroenteritis, as suggested by your doctor. Around 90% of all viral gastroenteritises are provoked by Rotavirus and last from 3-7, rarely 10 days. The most important thing is rehydration with over-the-counter ORS (oral rehydration solutions), that are well balanced in regards to electrolytes (minerals) which keep the water in the organism. It might be recommended for the first few days to keep her on a light diet: double-backed toast, light tea, bananas, boiled apples or carrots, as well as cooked rice or potatoes, to slow down the bowel movements. You might also want to add over-the-counter probiotic (like Lactobacillus acidophilus, for example) to help regain the normal bowel flora. If the condition does not calm or it worsens, it might be advisable to visit a pediatrician.
