Q: Treating thrush with antifungal creams
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 12th, 2009
For the last 3 years I've had what I can only assume is an STD. I got it from a guy that my friend slept a few months after I did and she said that her doctor told her that she has thrush when I mentioned that things weren't 'right' since I'd slept with him.
I have a lot of itching at the base of my vagina (near the perineum) and ONLY there. There are no sores that I've been able to find, however if the area is irritated enough (ie. from wiping after going to the toilet, sex, or even just plain scratching!) it will become very sore and still itches. When I do scratch there often there will be a white milky residue that comes up but it doesn't usually START there, it's only once the area has been irritated.
My husband has complained of itching as well on occassion and I've also never seen any sores or redness on his penis. The problem is that I've been inspected by a doctor who insisted that it was just thrush, but I've never heard of thrush lasting 3 years and surviving thrush cream!

Thrush is an infection with fungi called Candida. As with other fungal infections, there are big chances that the infection will return. The vaginal environment is excellent for fungal multiplying. Also, if the cream was applied only by you, your boyfriend might have given it back to you. The symptoms of fungal infection in men might not be severe as in women. So, a so called ping-pong effect might have occurred. Administration of strong antibiotics might have killed the normal bacteria of the vagina, thus creating enough space for the fungi.

You might want to try antifungal cream again. Please make your boyfriend applies the cream or there might not be results at all.
