Q: Treating thrush
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 26th, 2009
about two months ago my boyfriend tested positive for chlamydia so i went to the doctor and without getting any tests i was given medication. the medication was a one dosage antibiotic. two hours after taking the medication i had diarrhea. about 7-8 days after taking the meds (he also took meds about 7 days prior). we had unprotected sex. 2 days later he told me he had pain around the urethra but this eventually subsided within a day or two. recently i have had a very thick white discharge, so i treated myself for thrush. it hasn't cleared up. i also have had stomach pains, and pressure on my bladder. does this sound like chlamydia? is it possible that i still have it even after taking the meds? i have also had an unusual feeling around my urethra but it hasnt been painful to urinate.

thank you for your help.

Current medical status: heavy white discharge, has been constant for a few months. clumpy in texture. no odor. stomach pains in lower abdomen. pressure in bladder.
Current medical treatment: none.

Thrush is a fungal infection and is treated with antifungal medications which are not effective if the infection is bacterial. The exact cause can not be determined without a swab. However, whatever the reason is, both you and your boyfriend have to be treated and with the same medications (antibiotics or antifungal). Just to be sure that you no longer have the infection, a swab 10 to 14 days after the last medication taken is recommended.
