Q: Treating sunburn
asked by: DoctorQuestion on June 21st, 2009
I want to a tanning salon last night and went in too long, now i have an itchy sunburn that i cannot stop itching. Aloe Vera does not work, neither does benadryl. Please tell me what I can do.

Referring to the data you provided (itching skin after tanning), you might be experiencing sunburn due to excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays. One of the effects of excessive exposure of UV rays on the skin is skin inflammation.

You might try to reduce the inflammation by applying over the counter aftersun cream. Moisturizing lotion might help the skin to retrieve its elasticity. Taking more liquids would help you and your skin to restore the water lost through sweating. Sponging or taking a bath with lukewarm water might also be helpful.

Please note that the previous advice is only for mild skin burn. If severe skin aftersun burn has occurred, you might want to visit your family doctor to check if the sunburn needs to be dressed for several days to prevent infections and to reduce the inflammation.
