Self-injury is deliberate infliction of wounds. These people do not have a suicidal intent. The wound might mean a way to release anxiety, to cope with the problems or might mean something that is rational only to the person and might not be easily explained to someone else. The exact cause for self-injury is not completely established, although most researchers relate it to psychological issues.
There is also doubt about which treatment for this condition might be most beneficial. Cognitive behavioral therapy might show good results. Avoidance and biofeedback techniques might be learned. Drugs might be given if there is another psychological condition present, too (depression, for example).
As you can see, there are many possible causes and many available treatments. Which one might be best for you, should be determined by a psychotherapist after a period of observation in order to try to detect the causes for self-injury.
