Q: Treating liver cancer tumors
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 11th, 2009
I am now 3 and 1/2 months out of chemo and the cancer is in remission. I have been told that I will probably be in ongoing treatment for the rest of my life. I am wondering what is ahead for me. Since the cancer is not growing but still there is there a chance to completley get rid of it. What do my chances of beating the 2 year rate of survival? It was in my colon, ovaries, omentum and liver. The liver metastases is still 4.6x2.2x3.4 in the right hepatic lobe laterally.

If there is no other detectable metastatic disease other than in the liver (based upon CT-PET scan), then you should be considered for resection of this tumor (assuming that it is technically resectable). If, for various reasons, you cannot undergo a liver resection, and there is no other evidence of metastatic lesions, then a second alternative would be to undergo microwave or radiofrequency ablation ("burning") of your liver tumor.

It is, unfortunately, impossible to predict what will happen with individual patients in the future, and physicians are notoriously inaccurate at making such predictions.

If a thorough staging reveals no detectable disease outside of your liver, then I would recommend that you be seen by a Surgical Oncologist.

I wish the best.

Sincerely,
