Keloid is a scar tissue which overgrows at the site of a healed skin injury. Unlike, hypertrophic scars, keloid grows over the boundaries of the skin lesion. It is often accompanied with itching or a needle-like pain.
The exact mechanism of keloid development is not known, although several theories addressing uncontrolled growth and spreading of the connective tissue have been debated.
Since the mechanism is not known, there is no completely effective treatment for keloids. The keloid might be removed with surgery, although there is a great percentage of relapse. The chances for relapse are greatly reduced if surgery is combined with other methods such as steroid injections and many products containing certain extracts.
Your father might want to visit a dermatologist to consult which method would be most beneficial. If surgery us needed, he might be referred to a plastic surgeon.
